Purpose in the Mundane

Atypical Audit Vol. 14 Weeks of 10/24-11/7

Happy Friday Atypical Family!

Rehab is officially underway. The knee is responding well, and I’ve started strengthening the surrounding muscles. I’m now two days into full weight-bearing walking — a small but exciting milestone.

That said… these Lithuania days are starting to blur together.

Wake up → vitamins + coffee → rehab → couch → rehab → dinner → sleep.

Rinse, repeat.

It’s monotonous, no doubt. But in this slow season, my mental challenge has been to make the most out of each day, even when it feels painfully repetitive.

I know some of you might be in a similar phase of your own journey right now, so let’s talk about it.

Finding Purpose in the Mundane

A lot of times, the difference between good and great is simply the willingness to do the boring little things over and over…

and over.

I’m talking about the things that give you zero dopamine — the things where you won’t notice progress for a longggg time, the things that feel pointless until you look back and realize they were the needle-movers.

These exercises and routines can be absolutely mind-numbing, but they’re often the most important. Think of prehab before practice, or that 10-minute ball-handling warm-up you do every single day. One prehab session won’t make your knees pain-free, and one 10-minute workout won’t change your handle, but over a 10-month season, those same small investments can completely transform your body and your game.

These activities fall under the category of delayed gratification, and staying consistent with them is tough because the progress isn’t immediately visible. It takes time, patience, and discipline.

And since my entire day right now is basically made up of delayed-gratification work, I’ve been trying to answer one question:

How do I find joy and purpose in the mundane?

I’ve landed on two key pillars:

1️⃣ Big-picture vision & goals

Train your mind to see the big picture even when you’re buried in the details. Remind yourself that every small action brings you closer to a greater purpose. That reminder, that what you’re doing matters, becomes its own small dopamine hit.
Celebrate each step forward, no matter how tiny.

2️⃣ Search for the beauty

This journey is full of highs and lows, ugly moments and beautiful ones. The skill is learning to shift your awareness toward beauty, even at the simplest level.

For example: when I’m icing my knee on the Game Ready, I sit in silence in the physio room. In a normal season, that quiet moment would be almost impossible to find. Now, I get it every day. It’s peaceful. It’s a privilege. That silence is beautiful.

Both of these tools can be practiced in real time, while you’re doing the boring work.

I even give myself verbal cues during rehab, little whispers like “Big picture” or “Search for beauty.”
Does it make me sound a little crazy? Absolutely.
But the alternative is running on autopilot and I’m not willing to live like that.

Harness your awareness.
Give yourself anchors.
Operate with a big-picture vision and look for the beauty in every moment.

Upcoming Atypical

We’re making some serious moves.

The Atypical Athletics collection is officially in production. The current release window will likely be after Christmas. My EU fulfillment partner still isn’t fully locked in, and until I’m confident we can deliver efficiently, I don’t want to risk anyone’s order arriving late for the holidays.

I’m planning to move back to the U.S. in early December, and with that move comes some really exciting things for you all.

Atypical Intentions Podcast

This will be a weekly conversation around all things basketball and personal development, hosted by me and my business partner, best friend, and fellow development junkie, Kyle Cole.

Atypical Community
A space for all of us to learn, grow, and support one another on our journeys. Inside the community, you’ll get:

  • 24/7 access to me

  • Bi-weekly group calls

  • Community film-study breakdowns

  • Exclusive weekly workouts

  • Live access to the Atypical Intentions Podcast

Since it’s likely I won’t be playing this season, I’m dedicating myself fully to Atypical and its mission of inspiring and empowering the next generation of athletes. Outside of rehab and being present for my wife as we approach the birth of our first child, Atypical will be my priority.

I want to see you all win, and I’m committed to giving everything I can to help make that happen.

Final Thoughts

The little things have to matter.

You may not feel the difference today, but with sustained consistency over time, the results will be undeniable.

Use your awareness to bring purpose and joy into the mundane.
That’s where growth is built.

Everything you need to achieve your dreams is already within you.

Believe it.
