Major Realizations From This Past Month as a Pro Athlete
Atypical Audit Vol. 18
I’m officially three months into knee surgery rehab, and it’s been far slower than I expected. That pace has been difficult to accept, often bringing a lingering feeling of falling behind. But within that slowness, I’ve had a few major personal realizations… ones I believe will completely change my mindset when I return to playing. That’s what I want to share with you today, because I think hoopers at any stage of their journey can benefit from them.
Before I dive into that, I want to share some exciting updates on everything happening with Atypical.
Atypical Athletics Collection
The Atypical Athletics Collection officially launches on February 9th at 10:00 AM (PST).
All of the U.S. inventory is now organized in my basement, and it’s strangely satisfying to see an actual system coming together.

As you can tell, I need to get some decorations for the walls 😂
This is the first product I can genuinely say I’m proud of. From the design to the quality to the smallest branding details, it’s the highest-quality thing I’ve ever built. Here are a few sneak peeks so you can take a closer look (shot on my iPhone… sorry in advance for the quality 😂).
![]() “Patch” Shorts Price: $59.99 | ![]() Sand “Paisley” Shorts Price: $59.99 | ![]() “Jersey” Oversized Tank Top Price: $39.99 |

I know they may seem a bit expensive, but if you’re part of the Atypical Community, you’ll receive a discount code at sign-up for 10% or $10 off (whichever saves you more), essentially giving you a free month in the Community.
Speaking of the Community…
Atypical Community
In just over a month and a half, the Community has made massive strides. The weekly film breakdowns and group calls are exponentially more valuable and better organized. More importantly, the space is truly lived in. You can see the interactions and feel members growing week to week.
Now, when you sign up, you’ll also get a free 30-minute one-on-one call with me, where I can learn more about your journey and how I can best support your development.
For a full overview of everything the Community offers, watch the video below:

Atypical Intentions Podcast
We’re now seven episodes in with Kyle and me exploring the intersection of basketball and life. There’s been a lot of growth in our ability to make the podcast more digestible (still very much a work in progress 😂), and honestly, I didn’t expect it to be as challenging as it’s been.
That said, we have our first guest lined up for this Monday’s release…
Drum roll please
Sean McCurdy, probably better known on Instagram as @hoopswsean. Sean is heading into his second year as a pro hooper and is a well-known content creator, sharing high-quality drills and workout routines.
You can check out his content below:
We’ll dive into his journey from a Division III college hooper to an emerging pro, along with his training philosophies, mindset strategies, and broader perspective on how basketball has positively shaped his life.
Kyle and I are really looking forward to it.
It should be both insightful and inspiring.

Alright enough updates, let’s discuss the major realizations I have had through my rehab and training this last month ⬇️
Major Realizations Applicable to All Hoopers
1. Honor your tranquility as an athlete
During my morning reflections, I found myself overwhelmed by life, ambition, and the desire to be healthy right now. I dug into why I felt this way and, in the spirit of vulnerability, realized it came from my frustration with my basketball career progression—and the way that might look to others. I felt, in some sense, that my value had decreased because I wasn’t currently playing.
That’s when I came across this quote from Marcus Aurelius:
“The tranquility that comes when you stop caring what they say. Or think, or do. Only what you do”
No matter the outcome or how others perceive it, the only things we truly control are our actions and the intentions behind them. Everything else exists only to disturb our tranquility. Alignment and peace come from taking full ownership of our actions: we act as the person we say we are. Everything else is extra.
Applied to basketball, this is liberating. We can play without the pressure of others’ judgment. We can face injuries, setbacks, or bad games with a calm mind because we acted with our truest intentions. Results no longer dominate our experience. We do everything we can, and let the rest fall into place.
2. Consistently make good bets
This insight came from Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke, a professional poker player who applied her decision-making strategies from poker to life. Her key takeaway:
Life is full of uncertainty and incomplete information. The best approach is to treat every choice like a bet: separating the quality of the decision from the outcome, evaluating probabilities, and updating beliefs based on evidence rather than results alone.
In short: every decision is a bet, and very few bets are certain. Good luck and bad luck both exist, so evaluate your choices based on the process and the information you had… not just the result. Continuously seek new information to make better-informed bets in the future.
This has been huge for me in my basketball journey, especially after the decisions I made this past summer regarding my contract. I had been beating myself up over the outcome, thinking I had made the “wrong” choice. But after reflecting through Duke’s framework, I realized that based on the information I had at the time: my body felt strong, I had been training hard, there was very little to indicate my knee would flare up. Logically, my decision wasn’t bad. Separating the decision from the outcome has been a total game-changer.
The lesson is simple: you take the game-winning shot and miss, does that mean you shouldn’t shoot again? Absolutely not. Reframe, recenter, and focus on making consistently good decisions. Over time, results will follow.
Final Thoughts
This was a long one, but there was ton of fun stuff to update you guys on.
In a perfect world our progress is linear and consistent, but that is simply not the world we exist in.
There are twists and turns that are impossible to anticipate.
Flow with them, prioritize your alignment through them, and reflect on your decisions made when faced with them.
This is where peak development and living is found both on the court and off it.
Here’s to continuing to move forward.
Love you guys,
Trey
