Atypical Audit Vol. 3

Atypical Audit Vol. 3 Week of 7/7-7/13

Some News for You!

We’ve got a new t-shirt dropping soon! While the exact release date is still being finalized, the design is complete and the shirts are already in production as you read this.

Now, about the design…

As you know, each Atypical tee is built around a core principle, something that reflects the last 3–6 months of my personal journey, especially in terms of training and growth. This will be our third Atypical “Principle.”

The first was Excellence in the Pursuit of Excellence.
The second: Constant Evolution.
And now, the third…

In Due Time.

Atypical “Principle” #3: In Due Time

This principle was born out of what I felt during the final stretch of the season at Benfica. I was dealing with an injury that just wouldn’t heal as quickly as I wanted it to. Frustration and discouragement started to set in. But in the middle of that pain, I chose to double down on the work. I kept reminding myself: things will come together, not on my timeline, but when they’re meant to.

When you’re doing the right things with the right intentions, it’s not a matter of if things will fall into place… it’s a matter of when.

Give it time. Stay consistent. It’s inevitable.

Atypical Principle #3 “In Due Time” was created for anyone who’s grinding, showing up daily, and not seeing immediate results.

This shirt is a reminder and a commitment.

Your moment is coming.

All in due time.

My Training Philosophies Have Been Flipped Upside Down

This week, I made the daily 1.5-hour drive up to Bainbridge Island, Washington, to take part in the Elevate Basketball Camp hosted by NBA trainer Mitchell Kirsh (you might know him on Instagram as @hoopin_mitch).

First off, Mitch is the real deal. His training approach is incredibly detailed and high-level. He’s the mind behind the offseason development of some of the best shooters in the game, most notably, Duncan Robinson.

When you’re working with hoopers at this level, your training philosophies need to be airtight because they can spot a fraud from a mile away.

And let me tell you: Mitch has his principles dialed in. Not only are they sharp, but he breaks them down in a way that’s incredibly easy to understand and apply.

Here’s my takeaway— the two clearest principles that stood out to me:

1. Skill acquisition is faster and more effective when the athlete focuses externally, not internally.

In other words: players develop skills more efficiently when they’re reacting to a dynamic, unpredictable environment rather than repeating the same movement in a perfectly controlled setting. It’s about learning through response, not just repetition.

2. Build environments that force athletes to find solutions using the skills you want to develop.

The trainer creates the environment. The athlete solves the problem. This leads to game-ready skills and not just practice perfection. It creates adaptable, intuitive players rather than robotic ones.

I’ve been experimenting with some of these ideas over the past two years, slowly moving away from rigid, traditional training. But this camp opened my eyes.

I was wildly uncomfortable for all three days. There were drills where I shot under 40%. But even in that struggle, I could feel myself getting better.

From here on out, I’m making a radical shift in how I train, less repetition, more constraints. Less predictability, more problem-solving.

I hope I explained this clearly. But if not, do yourself a favor and check out Mitch’s page to get a better feel for his training principles: @hoopin_mitch.

Upcoming Atypical

This Sunday, I’m dropping a new YouTube video: “How to Build Your Offseason Training Plan Using the Bell Curve Method.”

In it, I break down exactly how to structure your offseason so that:

a) You avoid injuries and burnout
b) You enter next season better and fresher

I’m really excited about this one. I think it’ll be a game-changer for anyone serious about maximizing their offseason.

Also…

Don’t forget to grab your Atypical Workout Logs. These are designed to help you track your weight room progress throughout the offseason, so you can actually see your growth over time in a clear, tangible way.

You can grab yours here:

Lets maximize this offseason to the best of our ability.

Final Thoughts

I’m truly proud of what we’re building here at Atypical.

Slowly but surely, we’re creating something that will help thousands of hoopers on their journeys.

This has brought me immense joy and a deep sense of purpose.

Thank you all for being a part of it.

We fail together, we succeed together, and most importantly, we grow together.

Much love,

Trey
